    Resolving Electronic Failures of the Saab 9-3 NG

    Why This Story Matters

    When a car 'won't start,' the natural reflex is to look for a mechanical cause (fuel, sensor, starter). On the 9-3 NG, one must also consider the electronic architecture: ECUs, networks, gateway modules. This is precisely what this breakdown taught.

    The Realization: P0607 and the “PSG16” Reality

    In this configuration, the Bosch PSG16 pump is not just a pump: it also integrates part of the management intelligence (control / command) associated with the injection system.

    When the P0607 code appeared, it became clear that this was not a 'minor fault':

    • in workshop documentation, P0607 is linked to an internal PSG16 failure, and can lead to engine shutdown depending on the circumstances;

    • the 'manufacturer's' diagnostic approach often leads to module replacement, which quickly becomes unrealistic for aging vehicles.

    From Repair to Test Bench: Preserving the Car's Intelligence

    When the mechanical system eventually stopped (after a long life), the 'nervous system' was preserved for understanding. The wiring harness and key modules were retrieved, and a test bench was then reconstructed. The objective was not merely aesthetic: it was to verify that the electronics behaved as they would in a car.

    This test bench necessitated learning the logic of Saab's buses:

    • P-bus and I-bus (CAN networks with different data rates), with a gateway module;

    • O-bus, a ring-shaped optical network used primarily for audio/infotainment: if the ring is not closed, certain functions will not validate.

    Understanding Networks: When Diagnostics Become a Method

    It was on this test bench that the exchanges were first observed 'coming alive': modules communicate, respond, synchronize, and follow rules. From that point, the troubleshooting approach changed: starting from symptoms, verifying prerequisites, tracing back to the faulty module, and documenting.

    This blog emerged from that transition: from experienced breakdown to understood diagnosis, with a simple idea - to explain in order to better preserve.
