Saab Tech2 Guide: How to Obtain Security Access

Maintaining or repairing a Saab 9-3 often requires performing "sensitive" operations with the Tech2 diagnostic tool. This includes tasks such as replacing and reprogramming injectors or installing a new engine control module (ECM).

To validate these critical modifications, the vehicle requires a digital authorization key known as Security Access. Without this access, the Tech2 will be restricted and unable to complete the procedure. This guide outlines the step-by-step process to unlock this security feature using the online tool.

    Prerequisites

Before beginning, ensure the following items are available:

    1. Your Saab 9-3 (this example uses a 2006 model).

    2. Your Tech2 diagnostic tool connected to the vehicle's diagnostic port under the dashboard.

    3. A computer connected to the Tech2 via a serial cable or USB-to-serial adapter.

    4. The saabiste.net website opened in your web browser (Chromium/Chrome or Edge is recommended).

    [!NOTE]

Do not turn off the ignition or disconnect any cables during communication to avoid interrupting the process.

    Step-by-Step Guide

    Step 1: Vehicle Preparation

    • Sit in the driver's seat.

    • Insert the key and turn it to the ON position (the dashboard lights up, but do not start the engine).

Step 2: Initiating the Request on the Tech2

    • Power on the Tech2.

    • Navigate the menus to start the desired operation (e.g., Add ECM).

    • The Tech2 will communicate with the vehicle and display a message requesting Security Access.

    Step 3: Menu Navigation

    • Once the Tech2 displays the access request, the necessary information is stored in its internal memory.

    • Return to the main menu by pressing the EXIT key multiple times or restarting the device.

    • Important: Keep the ignition key in the OFF position.

Step 4: Connecting the Tech2 to the Computer

    • Connect the interface cable between the Tech2 and the computer.

    • Navigate to the dedicated page: Tech2 & Security.

    • Click "Detect & Open Port" and select the COM or USB port corresponding to the Tech2 connection.

    Step 5: Automatic Access Resolution

    • In the Saabiste application menu, select the "Write / Flash" tab.

    • Locate the "Security Access" section.

    • Click the green "Read & Resolve (dump)" button.

    • Allow the program to run without interference. After a few seconds, the Tech2 will restart automatically, indicating the access key has been successfully injected.

    Step 6: Final Validation

    • Ensure the ignition key is in the ON position.

    • Restart the procedure (e.g., Add ECM) on the Tech2.

    • During the security step, the Tech2 should now display "OK" on the Security Access line.

    • Authorization is granted; proceed with the component programming.
