We've all been there. You're in your garage, hands covered in grease, taking a part off your 9-3 or 9-5, and you need its exact reference. The problem? To access the official catalog (the EPC), you have to go back to your office, launch an old PC, or worse, start a sluggish Windows XP virtual machine. It's slow, inconvenient, and totally out of step with our times.
Today, we're turning the page. I am proud to introduce part.saabiste.net: the new online Saab EPC, modern and free.
Demystification: What is the EPC, exactly?
For years, the EPC has been perceived as "magic" proprietary software, jealously guarded. But if you look "under the hood," the reality is much simpler.
The EPC is essentially a Microsoft Access database (the famous epc-2010-4.mdb file) containing the structured list of parts, paired with a vast collection of images for technical diagrams. The data has always been there, but it was literally held prisoner by a software interface from another age. My job was to liberate this data from its software prison to finally make it usable on the modern web.
The Solution: part.saabiste.net
The goal of part.saabiste.net is simple: to offer every Saab owner instant access to the information they need. It's a tool created by an enthusiast, for enthusiasts.
Why you'll love it:
- Accessible Everywhere: Whether you're on your desktop, your tablet, or using your phone under the hood in the garage, the tool is fully mobile-friendly.
- VIN Search: This is the "pro" method. Enter your chassis number (VIN), and the tool directs you straight to the right model and year, with engine filters already applied.
- Fast Copy-Paste: Copy the exact part reference with a single click from the main table or the detailed view. It's the perfect tool for ordering from your favorite parts site without any typos.
- Intelligent Filtering: The parts list is contextual. It adapts precisely to your vehicle's model and options to avoid any ordering errors.
The interface allows you to target your Saab model in just a few clicks.
A V1, but a promising future
Let's be transparent: what you see today is a first version (V1), a successful proof of concept. But now that the data is on a modern web platform, anything is possible.
Here's what I'm looking at for the future:
- Adding new languages for the international community.
- An even more powerful global part search engine.
- Eventually, opening an API to connect this data to innovative tools, such as AI-assisted chatbots (ChatGPT/Gemini) capable of instantly answering your technical questions on WhatsApp or Telegram.
Intuitive navigation by component groups.
This is where you come in. This tool belongs to the community. Test it, report bugs to me, and above all, tell me which features you'd like to see prioritized.
Our Common Mission
Our long-term goal is simple: to make maintaining our Saabs easier and more precise. Because in the end, it's by better understanding our cars that we can keep them on the road for as long as possible.
